Bouncing back from the calamity that was Hurricane Katrina, Houston based road-warriors Helstar have once again begun to raise the ante in preparation for their next album which should be on the shelves later in the year. Begun in 1981 and boosted in 1984 when a chance meeting between guitarist James Barragan, Combat Records and singer James Rivera produced the spark that would later become the debut album “Burning Star”, this band are one of the reasons a label like AFM exists because they’ve always espoused the theory that hard work and ambition will bring rewards. A name that was on the lips of bands such as Megadeth, Metallica and Flotsam And Jetsam, Helstar are a band with real character and drive and 2008’s and last album, “The King Of Hell” simply proved what we all knew. Even though a lot of water has passed under the bridge, “The King Of Hell” continues the tradition of the band’s classics; “Nosferatu”, “Burning Star”, and “Distant Thunder”. Of course, technical evolution offers a lot of new possibilities, and they’ve taken some of them, but “The King Of Hell” fulfils all the promise that was present in “Sins Of The Past” (and some) and gives it a right, royal kick up the backside!
